An earthquake of 3.2 magnitude struck Karachi’s Malir neighbourhood, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Wednesday.
According to the Meteorological Office, the quake hit at 9:34 am with its epicentre located about seven kilometres northwest of Malir at a depth of 10 kilometres. The tremors come shortly after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake rattled Islamabad and several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa last week. Experts have noted that Pakistan and Afghanistan are among the most quake-prone regions in the world due to their location on the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plate boundary.
Last month, Afghanistan witnessed one of the deadliest earthquakes in recent years when a 6 magnitude shock devastated its eastern region, killing over 2200 people and injuring thousands more. Karachi itself has been experiencing repeated seismic activity. In June alone, the city reported at least 57 tremors, alarming residents and prompting authorities to keep a close watch. Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider explained that these frequent quakes are linked to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line after decades of dormancy. He added that the fault is currently passing through a normalisation phase, which may result in repeated but relatively mild tremors.
Although Thursday’s quake did not cause damage, experts continue to stress the importance of public awareness and preparedness in dealing with natural disasters. With seismic activity becoming more frequent, authorities are urging citizens to remain alert and follow safety measures during such incidents.
