PMD issues four-day heatwave alert across Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a heatwave alert for various parts of Pakistan until May 5, warning of severe weather conditions.

Authorities expect intense heat in parts of Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, with cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Bahawalpur particularly at risk. NDMA also warned that Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, and Turbat will face severe heat, along with a sharp rise in temperatures in some areas of central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The agency highlighted that people could suffer from heatstroke, dehydration, and other heat‑related health issues if they do not take proper precautions. The public has been urged to avoid going out unnecessarily during the hottest parts of the day, drink plenty of water, and take other preventive steps such as wearing light clothes and using shade. The NDMA has directed relevant government institutions to activate the national heat‑wave plan, set up cooling centers, and ensure that hospitals remain fully prepared and alert.

Provincial and district disaster management authorities have been told to stay on high alert and coordinate emergency responses so they can quickly assist affected communities. Officials also asked local administrations to spread awareness through media and local networks to keep citizens informed and safe during the heatwave period.
