WASHINGTON – A US government official has announced that the Biden administration has completed a successful pilot project for paperless visas, in what appears to be a major revamp of the system.
The change implies that the traditional practice of stamping U.S. visas onto passport pages may soon be replaced with paperless visas to facilitate flyers.
The United States intends to progressively expand the small-scale initiative that it recently finished at its diplomatic post in Dublin.
Julie Stufft, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services, shared on Wednesday that the U. S. has tested a new “paperless visa” system, hinting at the timeline for complete transformation and replacement of the old practice.
The authorities have recently tried the paperless visa for the first time, and although it won’t happen right away, the US official clarified that it can be implemented on a wider scale in about 18 months or more. In this initial test, immigration visas were issued without a physical paper in passports.
In the future, the US administration believes that an app or a digital solution will replace the physical paper to show visa status.
The paperless visa system offers multiple benefits and can also contribute to reducing the need for physical documentation and paperwork, thereby contributing to environmental conservation by minimizing paper usage.
This visa regime can also be advantageous considering that it is very easy to authenticate any fabricated visa through simple scanning.
The visa through paperless system can also facilitate the flyers who find it hard to carry passport and are always anxious about losing it in the hallways of airports as they rush through the immigration lanes.
