The Islamabad administration has decided to introduce electric tram in the capital city in a step toward modernising the transport system.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) of Islamabad decided during a meeting led by Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The meeting focused on expanding public transport with a strong emphasis on inclusivity. Chairman Randhawa stressed the importance of making the planned electric tram system easily accessible for women and persons with disabilities.
During the briefing, officials shared that the electric bus service in Islamabad has already reached over 90000 daily passengers. Encouraged by this success, the chairman directed authorities to complete a detailed feasibility study for the tram project and begin its full implementation. In addition to the tram service, CDA also plans to launch a new electric hearse bus to serve the general public. Four electric buses will also be reserved for CDA employees to improve their daily commute.
The chairman highlighted that modern and accessible transport is a key priority for Islamabad’s future. He also mentioned that partnerships with the private sector will be considered to support the tram system. The feasibility study will help determine the project’s timeline and implementation goals. These initiatives are part of CDA’s broader plan to promote green transport and make the city’s public transport system more efficient and user-friendly for all residents.
