Punjab cracks down on smoke-emitting vehicles amid smog threat

Punjab Police has intensified its efforts to curb environmental pollution through a province-wide crackdown focused on reducing smog and enforcing environmental laws.

According to official data, police registered 824 cases and arrested 775 people this year for violations related to environmental laws and pollution control. In Lahore, authorities arrested 41 suspects and registered 34 cases during the ongoing crackdown. Police operations are being carried out in major cities and industrial zones to ensure strict compliance with anti-smog regulations.

A police spokesperson said more than 290,000 vehicles were issued challans for emitting excessive smoke or violating environmental rules. Moreover, around 24,000 vehicles were removed from the roads for failing to meet emission standards, while fitness certificates of 283 vehicles were suspended. These actions aim to reduce vehicular pollution, which remains a key contributor to smog in Punjab’s urban areas.

Inspector General Punjab has instructed police officers to further tighten the campaign and focus on highways, factories, and high-risk zones where violations are common. He emphasized that no leniency will be shown toward those ignoring smog-related Standard Operating Procedures.

Authorities have also urged citizens and vehicle owners to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and adopt eco-friendly practices to help reduce pollution. The government hopes these continued efforts will bring visible improvement in air quality, especially in Lahore and other major cities severely affected by smog each winter. The province’s strong enforcement measures highlight its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring cleaner air for residents through sustained environmental reforms.
