Traditional cars to go electric soon

Following the announcement of reduced power rates for electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS), Pakistan on Thursday sought France’s assistance in accessing its Green Fund to transition conventional small vehicles to electric technology, promoting a cleaner environment and reducing oil import costs.

The government estimates that converting motorbikes, rickshaws, and small vehicles (up to 800cc) to electric technology would require an investment of Rs50000 to 150000 per unit, offering significant fuel savings and environmental benefits.

Pakistan imports $6 billion worth of petrol annually to fuel 10 million motorbikes. Converting these to electric engines could provide a return on investment within three to four months while reducing transportation costs. Similarly, transitioning rickshaws to electric technology would lower travel expenses, cut urban air pollution, and decrease commodity prices by reducing transportation costs.

The Power Division has recently reduced electricity rates for EV charging stations by 44%, lowering tariffs from Rs71.10 to Rs39.70 per unit, pending regulatory approval.

Minister Leghari also emphasized the introduction of the Wheeling Policy to optimize electricity distribution, allowing surplus power auctions and minimizing government involvement in the power sector. This measure aims to enhance transparency and attract private investments.

The government is also updating the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025 to overcome barriers to EV adoption. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting to address challenges in EV production, infrastructure development, and supply chain improvements.

The French ambassador commended Pakistan’s energy reforms and confirmed France’s willingness to support EV initiatives and clean energy transitions, reinforcing mutual efforts toward environmental and economic sustainability.
