UAE to end free EV charging in 2025

The United Arab Emirates has announced that its electric vehicle (EV) charging network will no longer be free as of next year.

Users will pay Dh1.20 per kWh for DC chargers and Dh0.70 per kWh for AC chargers, plus VAT. This change follows a period of free charging introduced in May.

To improve user experience, the UAEV will launch a mobile application featuring tools to locate charging stations, view live updates, and make seamless payments. Additionally, a 24/7 call center will provide instant assistance, ensuring a hassle-free experience for EV users.

By 2030, UAEV aims to establish a network of 1000 charging stations across the emirates. These chargers will be strategically placed in urban areas, highways, and transit hubs, ensuring convenient access for both inter-city and intra-city EV drivers.

Sharif Al Olama, Chairman of UAEV, highlighted that the new tariffs and innovative solutions like the mobile app align with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy. The initiative seeks to promote sustainable development while improving the overall EV driver experience.

This shift to paid charging services represents a step forward in making EV infrastructure more scalable and financially viable, reinforcing the country’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering eco-friendly practices.
