Sugar prices surged to Rs229 per kilogram across the country on Saturday, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
In Quetta, the price of flour rose by Rs19 per kilogram, reaching Rs229 from the previous rate of Rs210. Meanwhile, Peshawar recorded the highest flour price at Rs200 per kilogram, while Karachi and Islamabad reported rates of Rs195 per kilogram. In Rawalpindi, the maximum price was Rs190 per kilogram.
Despite these local increases, the PBS noted that the average national price of flour decreased slightly over the past week. The national average fell by Rs2.01 per kilogram, going from Rs187.48 to Rs185.47. The variation in prices reflects regional supply and demand differences, with Quetta experiencing the largest hike compared to other cities. Authorities continue to monitor these changes closely, as fluctuations in staple food prices can impact household budgets and overall economic stability.
Furthermore, the slight drop in the national average suggests that while some regions face price increases, others are benefiting from lower rates or improved supply. Consumers are advised to stay informed about price trends in their areas to manage household expenses effectively. Officials have emphasized the importance of balancing supply chains to ensure affordable flour availability nationwide. They also highlighted the role of local markets in stabilizing prices and preventing sudden spikes in essential commodities.
Overall, while residents of Quetta and a few other cities face higher flour costs, the national trend shows a minor easing, indicating mixed effects on consumers depending on their location. The PBS continues to track and report these changes to guide policy decisions and maintain market stability.
