Power Division clarifies report on power tariff hike

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a significant reduction in electricity rates under the monthly Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) mechanism. This adjustment lowers electricity bills for consumers of power distribution companies (DISCOs) and K-Electric for November and October 2024, respectively.

Key Highlights

  1. Rate Reductions Approved
    • DISCOs: A reduction of 75 paisa per unit for November 2024.
    • K-Electric: A decrease of 49 paisa per unit for October 2024.
These reductions exceed the initial requests by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) and K-Electric, which sought a 63 paisa and 27 paisa per unit decrease, respectively.
  2. Consumer Categories Impacted
The adjusted rates will apply to most consumer categories. However, the following groups are excluded:
    • Lifeline consumers.
    • Domestic users consuming up to 300 units.
    • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS).
    • Prepaid tariff users.
    • Agricultural consumers across XWDISCOs.
Notably, domestic consumers with Time of Use (ToU) meters will benefit from the negative FCA adjustment, regardless of their consumption levels.
  3. Implementation Timeline
The reduction for November 2024 will be reflected in the January 2025 electricity bills for consumers served by XWDISCOs.

Financial Relief for Consumers

This adjustment is designed to alleviate the financial burden on consumers by aligning electricity costs with fuel price fluctuations. NEPRA’s decision demonstrates a commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in electricity pricing mechanisms.

Consumers are encouraged to review their January 2025 electricity bills to confirm the updated charges.
