February sees 35% decline in Rice exports despite subsidies

Pakistan’s rice exports declined sharply by 35.38 percent in February despite government subsidies, raising concerns among exporters over the effectiveness of the support program.

The Commerce Ministry in Pakistan implemented duty drawback rebates to increase the exports of rice. They were giving 3 percent of cash back on coarse rice and 9 percent on basmati. Local taxes and fees are approximately Rs15 billion. Exporters were hoping that this cure would make them more competitive on the global front.

Numbers paint a grim picture. Basmati exports went by 19 percent in value and 28 percent in volume. Rough rice was worse off, with a 42 percent decrease in value and 33 percent reduced volume exported. The prices in the country soared to a killing. The hoarders bought stocks by spurring prices to heights. Refinance loans are quick and pursued by exporters as opposed to smart supply chains.

Value-added commodities such as rice flour, snacks, glucose and left over are left unattended. There is gold lying unexploited. Top exporters slam the plan. Port rebates do not correct farm roots. The actual growth requires larger harvests and lower-priced seeds, water, fertilizer, and power by the growers. Post-harvest distribution flyers are off target.

Leaders hear the call loud. Export raw grains shift to fancy rice delicacies and extras. Develop international muscle with smart products and not balls. Farmers cry out in need of assistants. Seeds that grow better yield better. Smart water saves drops. The output of low-cost fuel and feed is high.

Rice fields hold Pakistan’s export dreams. Weak links snap under price wars. Hoarding chokes the flow from field to ship. Exporters push for big changes. Grow more, spend less, process smart. Global shelves hunger for Pakistani flair—step up now. Government weighs the pleas.
