Pakistan’s mobile industry witness surge

Pakistan’s mobile phone manufacturing industry witnessed unprecedented growth in 2024, driven by favorable government policies and increasing local demand for affordable devices. The country produced and assembled an impressive 2.95 million mobile units in December alone, contributing to a total of 31.4 million mobile phones manufactured during the year—a staggering 47% increase compared to 2023.

The surge in local production is a result of the government’s policies aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing while discouraging imports. By prioritizing local assembly, Pakistan has significantly reduced its dependence on imported devices. Local production now fulfills 95% of the country’s mobile phone demand, a remarkable leap from previous years.

A key highlight of this growth is the shift towards smartphones. Out of the total mobile phones produced in 2024, 59% (18.64 million) were smartphones, reflecting the country’s increasing digital adoption and the expanding demand for internet-enabled devices. The remaining 41% consisted of 2G feature phones, which remain popular in rural areas and among users seeking basic connectivity options.

This rapid growth in mobile phone manufacturing is also expected to boost Pakistan’s digital economy. With the rising demand for smartphones, local manufacturers are focusing on expanding production capacity and improving product quality. The shift toward domestic production has already created thousands of jobs, fostering economic growth and reducing unemployment.

Looking ahead, industry experts believe that continued government support, foreign investment, and technological advancements will further strengthen Pakistan’s mobile manufacturing sector. If the current trajectory continues, the country is well-positioned to become a major player in the global mobile phone market, accelerating its journey toward a more connected and digitally empowered future.
