A natural gas pocket has been confirmed by TPL Properties as the source of the ongoing fire that has been burning for six days at Karachi’s Korangi Crossing.
The fire erupted near an excavation site, but no casualties have been reported as workers and nearby individuals moved to safety.
According to initial technical evaluations and industry experts, the fire is linked to shallow biogenic methane. This gas naturally forms due to the decomposition of organic material. Since the site is not part of a known natural gas reservoir, experts believe the gas pocket will gradually dissipate if the flame continues to burn.
The company involved has conducted extensive studies with national and international consultancy firms. These studies included geotechnical assessments, soil composition and contamination tests, Electrical Resistivity surveys, and a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.
Authorities and the company have taken necessary steps to manage the situation and keep stakeholders informed. Despite ongoing efforts, the fire remains active, raising concerns about environmental and safety risks in the area.
