Punjab set to present Rs5.37tn budget today

The Punjab government will present a whooping Rs5.37 trillion budget today. Provincial Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman will deliver the budget announcement at the Punjab Assembly.

The proposed budget outlay is likely to surpass the previous Punjab Budget by Rs910 billion (a 20.3% increase). The government hopes to get an estimated share of Rs3,700 billion from NFC’s divisible pool for FY2024-25.

The provincial exchequer has earmarked an income through tax collection and other means of Rs1,027 billion. It is also expected to allocate Rs597 billion for salaries, Rs447 billion for pensions and Rs841 billion for service delivery.

Moreover, salaries of Punjab government employees are likely to see an increase in line with the raise proposed by the federal government in its Budget 2024-25 announcement. Finally, an allocation of up to Rs125 billion has been proposed for the repayment of external loans.
