First breast cancer prevention vaccine developed in Pakistan

Pakistan has successfully developed a vaccine aimed at preventing breast cancer, marking a significant step in the country’s healthcare sector.

The Institute of Public Health Punjab created the Human Papillomavirus vaccine, which experts say could provide effective protection against the disease. The provincial government is supporting the initiative as part of its focus on improving health services. Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja described the development of the Papilloma vaccine as a remarkable achievement. Medical experts highlighted that the vaccine is particularly effective when administered in three doses to girls at the age of 12, offering lifelong protection against breast cancer.

Renowned expert Professor Dr. Javed Akram explained that this initiative could play a crucial role in reducing breast cancer cases across the country. Policy discussions have also begun to explore the production and wider distribution of the vaccine, aiming to make it accessible to all eligible girls nationwide.

In related international news, the US Food and Drug Administration recently approved a new precision drug called Datroway, jointly developed by AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo, for the treatment of a type of advanced breast cancer. Datroway is designed to target cancer cells specifically while sparing healthy cells, offering a safer alternative to conventional chemotherapy. The drug will be available by prescription in the United States at a list price of $4,891 per vial within the next two weeks.

These developments show growing global and national efforts to prevent and treat breast cancer more effectively. While Pakistan focuses on preventive measures through vaccination, treatments like Datroway demonstrate advances in therapy for patients already affected by the disease. Health authorities encourage awareness and timely medical intervention to maximize the impact of these medical breakthroughs.
