Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke on recent adjustments to Canada’s immigration laws as the nation struggles with its expanding population and associated issues.
The government could have acted quicker, Trudeau acknowledged, but he called the new immigration strategy straightforward and simple.
Addressing the challenges facing Canada’s immigration system, Trudeau reflected on the post-pandemic period, saying, “When the economic boom slowed, we should have acted faster to control immigration numbers.”
With the 2025 federal election approaching and his party trailing in the polls, Trudeau faces growing criticism, especially from those blaming higher immigration for housing shortages and inflation.
Trudeau outlined a new immigration plan focusing on skilled workers, particularly in healthcare and construction.
Under the revised policy, the number of permanent residents will be reduced, with a target of 395,000 for 2025 down from 485,000 this year.
Temporary immigration, including foreign workers and international students, will also decrease, with a projection of 446,000 by 2025.
He also criticized the exploitation of immigration programs, especially by large corporations and educational institutions using international students to boost profits.
Trudeau condemned scammers taking advantage of vulnerable immigrants, promising false citizenship opportunities.
