Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced new rules for international students seeking employment in Canada after graduation.
Starting November 1, 2024, new eligibility rules will apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada.
Only graduates from designated programs in priority fields, including Agriculture, Healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and Trade and Transport, will qualify for the PGWP.
This change aims to channel talent into sectors crucial for Canada’s economic growth.
Canada work visa requirements for international students
In addition to program restrictions, students applying for study permits on or after November 1 must meet minimum language proficiency standards in either French or English to ensure they are ready for the workforce.
To help students navigate these changes, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has published a list of 966 eligible programs.
Students who applied for a study permit before November 1, 2024, are not affected by the program field restrictions but must meet the updated language proficiency requirements.
These updates are part of Canada’s broader strategy to align immigration with its labor market needs, supporting sectors vital to economic growth and ensuring that new immigrants can integrate successfully.
