Chinese authorities have imposed a sweeping ban on uncertified power banks aboard domestic flights, following a spate of fire-related incidents involving lithium battery-powered devices.
This decision comes after many reports of batteries overheating or catching fire during flights. CAAC said that several in-flight incidents involving power banks releasing smoke or catching fire have been reported since early 2025. These cases raised serious safety concerns, especially because fires are difficult to control while flying.
Two major power bank recalls led to this step. Earlier this month, Romoss, a company based in Shenzhen, had to recall around 492000 of its 20000mAh power banks after some universities in China reported fire risks. These power banks were made between June 2023 and July 2024. Another big recall came from Anker, a global electronics brand. Anker recalled 710,000 power banks worldwide on June 20 due to fire hazard risks linked to battery materials.
Though 3C certification will become mandatory from August 1, CAAC has decided to start the ban earlier to prevent accidents. Even older power banks bought before the new rule must meet these safety standards to be allowed on flights. Several other airlines and authorities, such as EVA Air, Malaysia Airlines, and the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department, have also issued similar rules to stop the use and charging of power banks during flights.
Experts say China’s action shows strict steps are being taken to keep passengers safe, especially as more people carry personal electronic devices while traveling.
