In what appears to be a surprising move for the US, China has enforced visa restrictions on some of its officials for their stance on the Tibet issue.
The US government has accused the Chinese Communist Party of preventing foreign access to Tibet, urging for “unrestricted access” for US diplomats and others. The restrictions affect US diplomats, journalists, and international observers, limiting their ability to visit Tibet and surrounding areas.
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that Tibet is an internal affair of China. He argued that the US’s use of visa restrictions over Tibet was a violation of international law and basic diplomatic principles.
China has stated that foreign tourists are allowed to visit Tibet’s westernmost region, but only in groups and with prior permits. Diplomats and foreign journalists must seek approval from local Tibetan authorities to visit the area.
Lin clarified that Tibet is open and welcomed foreigners who wish to travel or do business there, but stressed that China would not allow foreign interference in Tibet under the pretext of human rights, religion, or culture.
China’s control over Tibet, which it describes as a peaceful liberation, has been widely criticized by international human rights groups and exiled Tibetans, who accuse China of suppressing Tibetan culture and freedoms since it occupied the region in 1950.
