CANBERRA – In a significant move, the authorities in Australia canceled visas it previously granted to Palestinians fleeing Gaza.
The decision to cancel visas previously granted to Palestinians with family members in Australia has sparked international condemnation and raised concerns about the fate of those affected. The move has left affected individuals stranded in a war-torn zone, unable to seek refuge elsewhere.
Critics, including advocates and human rights organizations, have lambasted the Australian government for what they perceive as a heartless and unjustifiable U-turn. The sudden cancellation of visas has left many Palestinians from Gaza in a state of distress, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict’s uncertainty.
Adding to the turmoil is the fact that some of the visas were canceled when the Palestinians were in transition and were heading to the next flight.
Despite Australia’s initial willingness to offer refuge, as evidenced by the issuance of a significant number of temporary visas between October 7, 2023, and February 6, 2024, the decision to revoke these visas has left many confused and outraged.
The decision to withdraw visas had triggered concerns amongst the rights groups though the government cites security as a reason behind the move.
As the conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, over 31,100 Palestinians have reportedly been killed since Israel initiated airstrikes in Gaza following a Hamas attack on October 7, resulting in an estimated 1,139 casualties. The international community calls on Australia to reconsider its actions and uphold its obligations to protect refugees fleeing violence and persecution.
