KARACHI – As the sacred month of Ramadan commences, the national carrier has issued a directive urging pilots and crew members to refrain from fasting while operating flights.
A recent communication addressed to cabin crew members highlights advice from Corporate Safety Management and the Aircrew Medical Centre, emphasizing the risks fasting during flight poses to both themselves and passengers.
Although it has been acknowledged that fasting and flying are technically feasible, the inherent risks are deemed significant. In this regard, concerns center around potential impairments in judgment, incapacitation, and decreased reflexes.
Acknowledging that the sanctity of fasting is undeniable, the airline is reminded that Ramadan alters daily routines, and relaxation has been granted while fasting.
With attention, decision-making abilities, and stamina potentially compromised during fasting, the airline has been cautioned about the heightened risks.
A spokesperson for the national flag carrier has confirmed the issuance of a circular on this matter, ensuring compliance among staff. Given that the majority of the airline’s personnel are observing Ramadan, which began on March 12th and spans 29 or 30 days, these precautions aim to safeguard both passengers and crew members alike.
At the moment, Pakistan International Airlines is not operating flights at par with the fleet size due to multiple issues including financial challenges and a ban on the carrier to fly to the United Kingdom and other European destinations.
