US may oust Ukrainian president, says veteran journalist

Award-winning journalist Seymour Hersh has alleged that the United States is planning to potentially forcefully remove Ukrainian President Zelensky from power.

US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has claimed that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not resign, he could be forcibly removed from office. However, reports suggest Zelensky is unlikely to step down on his own. According to Hersh, Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s former army chief and current ambassador to the UK, is expected to replace Zelensky. This leadership change may happen within a few months. The journalist also mentioned that many in both Ukraine and the United States believe the war must end, and some see a possible compromise with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelensky’s official term ended on May 20, 2024, but elections were canceled due to the ongoing war. This delay in elections has raised concerns internationally about the country’s political direction during wartime. Meanwhile, Russia launched a major overnight attack on Ukraine between Saturday and Sunday, injuring at least 12 people. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia fired 477 drones and 60 missiles at various targets. The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have intercepted 475 drones and 39 missiles.

In response, President Zelensky once again called for stronger air defenses and requested additional US-made Patriot missile systems. He said better air defense is the most effective way to protect civilians from future attacks. Zelensky stressed that Putin has clearly chosen to continue the war, despite international calls for peace. On the other hand, US President Donald Trump, known for his softer stance on Russia, has not responded to Ukraine’s latest defense requests. Peace talks remain stalled, and both sides continue to suffer heavy losses.
