US to impose visa ban against Israeli settlers

WASHINGTON – A top official from the US State Department mentioned on Friday that the US was getting ready to ban visas for Israeli settlers who have been involved in violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The State Department official said the visa ban may be implemented as early as next week, in what appears to be a major diplomatic signal from the Biden administration.

Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also clarified Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington was preparing to impose sanctions against the individuals not disclosed currently.

“We’re looking to the Israeli government to take some additional steps to really put a stop to this. And at the same time, we’re considering our own steps,” he said.

If the visa ban is implemented, the affected individuals would be excluded from the Visa Waiver Program, which permits citizens of member countries visa-free entry into the United States for up to 90 days. 

The violence in the West Bank is also rising since a war started about eight weeks ago between Israel and Hamas. The overall death toll in the country has risen to above 15,000 and the ceasefire has ended, prompting Israel to unleasha fresh wave of violence.

The US administration and especially Anthony Blinken is asking Israel to punish settlers who are doing violence against Palestinians.

US President Joe Biden had also hinted at the possibility of imposing a visa ban against individuals involved in violence though the final decision in this regard is awaited.

During the week-long truce that has recently ended, both sides exchanged hostages and efforts are underway by Qatar and other regional players for another ceasefire.

The Israel-Hamas truce began on November 24 and was renewed twice. Under the agreement, fighting was paused and humanitarian aid was allowed to enter Gaza.

The human rights groups are continuously asking both sides to de-escalate and bring peace to the country marred by constant violence and hostility. The officials related to health in Palestine are also pressing Israel to stop the violence and at least stop targeting public health facilities.
