BEIJING – In a significant development, the authorities in China have revealed that the country is easing its visa-free policy for entering the southern island province of Hainan.
The China National Immigration Administration announced on Friday that visitors from 59 countries (Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the UAE, the USA, the UK, Ukraine) can now enter Hainan visa-free for various purposes, such as business, visiting relatives, tourism, medical treatment, sports events, or attending exhibitions.
This decision comes after an earlier announcement in October, which allowed travelers from these 59 countries to visit the island without a visa through a travel agency, upon invitation by an entity, or as individuals.
Under the new policy, visitors are permitted a stay of up to 30 days in Hainan Province, a significant expansion from the previous policy, which only allowed visa-free entry for tourism purposes.
The China National Immigration Administration stated that the revised policy aims to promote comprehensive reform and openness in Hainan and support the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
In addition to visa discussions, China had previously granted visa-free entry to citizens of certain European countries until November 30, 2024. Beyond European nations, China’s efforts to streamline visa processes extend globally, as evidenced by the recent relaxation of rules for US citizens.
Hainan, China’s southernmost province, is home to a population of approximately 9 million people. Renowned for its pristine beaches, lush tropical forests, and cultural landmarks such as Nanshan Temple and Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone. Its economy thrives on tourism, agriculture, and the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, driving international investment and trade in the region.
