SYDNEY – The authorities in Australia are planning to take measures to reduce the inflow of immigrants, as confirmed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Albanese revealed recently that a new plan would be introduced to return immigration to levels that can be maintained over time.
Prime Minister further said, “We want a system for people coming to Australia that brings in those with skills we need, but we also want to make sure it’s good for everyone already living in Australia.”
Australia, like many other countries, has experienced a surge in population growth, primarily driven by immigration which has contributed to increased demand for various resources, such as housing, transportation, and services. The announcement to discourage immigration suggests a reevaluation of the country’s population policy, potentially seeking a more controlled and sustainable pace of growth.
On the other hand, this growth is also helping the economy because more people means more spending and less chance of a recession, which is when the economy isn’t doing well. Experts say that after the pandemic, a lot of people moved to Australia, making the population grow faster consequently affecting the country in different ways, both positive and challenging.
The prime minister also commented on the influx of students to the country from different parts of the world, visibly criticizing such migration of foreign students.
“People are coming here, enrolling in courses that don’t really add substantially to either their skills base or to the national interest here,” he said and added that it’s not in the interests of our neighbours, nor is it in the interests of Australia, that there not be a crackdown on this.
“We’re determined to do that,” he affirmed.
Earlier in June, the government of Australia said it was reintroducing limits on the number of work hours permitted for student visa holders (subclass 500) studying and working in the country.
An official press release by the immigration department said from July 1, the number of work hours allowed during study terms and semesters will be capped at the increased amount of 48 hours per fortnight, during study terms and semesters.
Student visa work restrictions were eased throughout the pandemic and were temporarily removed in January 2022 but this temporary arrangement will end on 30 June 2023. At that time, the government had announced that the fresh regulations would ensure that student visa holders can focus on their learning in Australia, but also take up paid employment and gain valuable work experience while studying.
Australia, a vast and diverse country, is characterized by its stunning landscapes, vibrant cities, and unique wildlife. Major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane offer a blend of modernity and multicultural influences.
