Australia unveils new anti-immigration strategy: Here’s how students would be affected

SYDNEY – The Australian government introduced a new ten-year immigration strategy to address what it perceives as a “broken” immigration system, making migration more tough.

The plan targets reducing migration intake by around 50% within the next two years, aiming for an annual intake of about 250,000 by June 2025. This strategic move encompasses stricter visa regulations for international students and low-skilled workers due to housing and infrastructure challenges arising from record-high migration levels though business community is against such reforms.

Australia, like many other countries, has experienced a surge in population growth, primarily driven by immigration which has contributed to increased demand for various resources, such as housing, transportation, and services and the lack of such prompted the authorities to cap immigration.

Australia’s Home Minister Clare O’Neil said that the migration system was messed up by the last government, and now they’re working hard to fix it.

Additionally, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said that the goal of these adjustments is to balance the long-term economic requirements with the pressing issues of affordable housing and pressure on the infrastructure.

As part of the changes, Australia has tightened its English language proficiency criteria for foreign students and heightened scrutiny for those seeking a second visa.

As far as English language proficiency is concerned, under the International English Language Testing System, students applying for a Graduate visa will need a score of 6.5 which was previously 6.0, while student visa applicants will need a 6.0 which was previously 5.5.
