Karachi Stadium set for big opening

The newly-renovated National Bank Stadium in Karachi will be inaugurated tomorrow evening with a vibrant ceremony, including fireworks and a light show.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently inaugurated the newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium ahead of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, marking a significant milestone in its 65-year history. The event featured performances by renowned singers Ali Zafar, Arif Lohar, and Aima Baig, followed by an electrifying drum performance, a spectacular fireworks display, and a stunning light show.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced that the stadium’s reconstruction, which began on September 28, 2024, was completed on January 31, 2025. The renovation included the complete demolition and rebuilding of the pavilion, installation of new seating in all enclosures, and upgrades such as LED lights, modern scoreboards, and improved viewing angles by removing barriers. Additionally, hospitality boxes were renovated, and a new color-coded road and pedestrian bridge were constructed.

President Asif Ali Zardari will be the chief guest at an upcoming celebratory event, where the public will have free entry. The occasion will feature performances by famous singers Ali Zafar, Shafqat Amanat Ali, and Sahir Ali Bagga, followed by a grand fireworks and light show.

Naqvi praised the dedication of the labourers, FWO, NESPAK, contractors, and PCB officials who contributed to the project. He emphasized that world-class facilities have been introduced for both players and spectators, ensuring an exceptional experience during the Champions Trophy. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was also acknowledged for her valuable support in the renovation process.
