Hungary implements strict measures against illegal foreign workers

BUDAPEST – In a significant move, the authorities in Hungary have announced strict actions against illegal foreign workers.

This decision comes in response to numerous false work permits in Hajdú-Bihar County, prompting local authorities to alert law enforcement about irregular employment practices involving third-country citizens falsifying official documents.

According to a website managed by the Hungarian Prime Minister’s international communication office, such offenses carry severe penalties, including potential three-year sentences.

In addition to cracking down against irregular foreign employment, Hungary has introduced more stringent immigration rules. These measures aim to prioritize job opportunities for citizens of Hungary, ensuring they are given preference in the employment market. Foreign nationals will now only be eligible for specific job roles if no Hungarian citizen is available to fill them, as outlined by the Hungarian Ministry for National Economy.

Moreover, Hungary has also revised its quota system for third-country workers, which has been in place for two decades. Previously, the quota was determined based on the average number of job vacancies over the previous four quarters. However, authorities have decided to lower the quota limit from a potential 81,000 to 65,000 this year.

Furthermore, the Hungarian government has released a list of 300 jobs for which guest worker residence permits will not be granted. This decision effectively excludes citizens of third countries holding temporary work permits from these specific job positions.

Despite Hungary’s strong passport ranking in 7th place, with citizens enjoying visa-free access to 188 destinations according to the Henley Passport Index 2024, the government remains focused on maintaining control over its labor market in the face of changing economic and labor market dynamics.

Hungary, located in Central Europe, has a population of approximately 9.7 million. Its capital, Budapest, is renowned for its stunning architecture and thermal baths. The economy is driven by manufacturing, agriculture, and tourism, with attractions like the Danube River and historic sites contributing to its vibrant tourism industry.
