Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the UN Security Council on Wednesday to impose sanctions, including arms embargo and trade ban, on Israel for committing genocide against the Palestinian people.
The prime minister stressed the necessity of pressuring Israel to stop its brutality in Gaza and to cease its attempts to instigate a wider conflict in the Middle East during a statement given during the High-Level Open Debate of the Security Council on “Leadership for Peace,” which was held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly Session.
The prime minister emphasized that while she strongly condemned Israel’s shelling of Lebanon, it was now imperative to hold its leadership accountable for its crimes against the people of Lebanon and the Palestinians.
He also begged the Security Council to develop an impartial plan for a diplomatic and cease-fire in the Ukrainian crisis.
He stressed that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute could no longer be ignored by the Council in relation to the Kashmir problem. It is a serious danger to global security and peace.
The prime minister said, “The council has to put an end to the widespread abuses of the fundamental rights of the people of Kashmir and carry out its own resolutions calling for a plebiscite for self-determination in the Kashmir valley.
In addition, the speaker urged the Council to take decisive action against the revival of the terrorist threat emanating from Afghanistan, particularly from Daesh and Fitna al-Khawarij.
In addition, he asserted that in order to combat terrorism and foreign interventions, the Council needs to actively assist the African nations and the African Union. “UN peacekeeping needs to become more capable and efficient.”
In order to reduce escalating tensions and avert a confrontation between key nations, particularly in Asia, he continued, the Council should start putting building measures in place.
The prime minister further emphasized the necessity for the Council to establish zero tolerance for the unlawful use of force and to redouble international efforts to stop and reverse the current arms race in conventional and nuclear weapons.
“It must also establish command over new weaponry and technology, such as AI, which is increasing the likelihood and severity of war.”
He stated that after taking a seat in the Security Council the next year, Pakistan would work with other members of the council to achieve these goals.
