In compliance with an order from the Lahore High Court, the Punjab Environment Protection Department has announced stringent measures and heavy penalties to curb the unnecessary use of water.
The Punjab government has imposed a Rs10,000 fine for washing vehicles at home and using pipes for non-essential water usage. Authorities have also ordered strict action against illegal service stations.
A special committee, including Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Secretary of Environment Raja Jahangir, and DG Environmental Protection Imran Hamed Sheikh, has been formed to ensure the Lahore High Court’s orders are enforced.
DG Imran Hamed Sheikh stated that all service stations in Punjab must install water recycling systems by February 28. Those failing to comply will face a Rs100,000 fine.
New regulations also ban washing vehicles with oil-based substances and prohibit the use of groundwater at construction sites. These rules have been enforced under the Punjab Environmental Act with immediate effect.
The Environmental Department reported that Punjab has seen a 42% decrease in rainfall over the past five years, causing a severe water shortage. The new measures aim to conserve water and prevent further depletion.
Citizens have been urged to follow these regulations and avoid wasting water. Strict legal action will be taken against violators.
