Karachi is experiencing a rise in COVID-19 cases, as 25 to 30 percent of patients with cold and cough symptoms are testing positive for the virus.
Professor Saeed Khan, an infectious disease expert at Dow Hospital, has highlighted this surge in cases. In addition to COVID-19, 10 to 12 percent of patients are being diagnosed with Influenza H1N1, while 5 to 10 percent of children are suffering from respiratory infections. The similar symptoms of COVID-19, Influenza H1N1, and other seasonal viruses often delay testing and proper diagnosis.
At Dow Hospital, many patients with fever, cough, and breathing difficulties have been confirmed as COVID-19 cases. There is also a noticeable rise in cases involving respiratory complications and related health issues.
A distinct symptom of COVID-19 continues to be the loss of taste and smell. However, overlapping symptoms with other infections make it challenging to distinguish between different illnesses. These infections are spreading more rapidly during winter, especially in poorly ventilated environments.
Health authorities are urging the public to adopt preventive measures such as wearing masks, practicing good hygiene, and staying warm. Vaccination against influenza is also recommended to lower the risk of infections. With the rise in cases, it is essential to remain cautious and seek timely medical care for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
