Incumbent Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa is set to retire on October 25 with Justice Mansoor Ali Shah next in line to replace him.
CJP Isa has reportedly abandoned a major tradition by declining his retirement dinner. The reported reason being given is that the top judge doesn’t want public money to be spent on his farewell dinner, or any dinner in his honour, for that matter.
It is customary to host a dinner in honour of retired Supreme Court judges or Chief Justices, but Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa has chosen to abandon this tradition.
The Registrar’s Office had previously announced that a full court reference for the Chief Justice would take place on October 25 followed by a farewell dinner from the Supreme Court Bar Association.
However, CJP Isa in his formal reply declined the dinner, which would’ve reportedly cost the national exchequer Rs2 million.
It is worth mentioning that the top judge had refused a proposed extension in his tenure under age limit reforms.
