Government reduces petrol and diesel prices by Rs5 per litre

Petrol prices set to rise from October 1

The federal government cut petrol and diesel prices by Rs5 per litre, effective midnight on 16 May 2026.

According to a petroleum division notification, petrol will now cost Rs409.78 per litre and diesel Rs409.58 per litre. The revised rates will remain in effect for seven days. This reduction offers short-term relief after a recent sharp rise in fuel costs. Consequently, motorists and transport operators may see immediate savings on fuel purchases.

Moreover, commuters could benefit from slightly lower transport fares if transporters pass on the reduction. However, industry analysts warn that the cut is modest and temporary, so its wider economic impact may be limited. Furthermore, the government said it made the change following a routine weekly review of international oil prices and local tax components.

Officials explained that domestic fuel rates reflect global market movements, currency fluctuations, and regulatory levies. Therefore, any future price adjustments will depend on these same factors in the coming weeks. In addition, the Petroleum Division urged petroleum companies and fuel stations to implement the new rates promptly and to display updated price lists for consumers.

Consumer rights groups welcomed the move but called for greater transparency in how prices are set and for measures to protect low-income households from future volatility. Meanwhile, transport associations and small businesses said they will monitor whether the short-term reduction translates into lower operating costs.

Economists noted that a sustained easing of global crude oil prices or a stronger rupee would be needed for longer-term relief. Citizens are advised to check official government and oil company channels for confirmation of prices and any further updates. The government will announce the next review after the seven-day period ends.
