Govt issues warning on illegal VPNs & AI bots

The government has issued a warning to users who rely on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and AI-powered tools, highlighting the rising security risks posed by hackers using phishing techniques. These hackers have been embedding malicious code into legitimate browser extensions, which could expose users’ personal information.

Among the 16 compromised extensions identified are popular tools such as AI Assistant – ChatGPT, Bard AI Chat Extension, VPNCity, VidHelper Video Downloader, and Trackker – Online Keylogger Tool. Once downloaded, these extensions could allow hackers to steal sensitive data, including personal identifiable information (PII).

The National Information Technology Security Board (NTITSB) has issued several important recommendations to help users protect their privacy and security:

  1. Avoid using the compromised extensions and choose trusted alternatives.
  2. Only install extensions from reliable sources, such as official stores or developer websites.
  3. Thoroughly check the permissions and reviews of extensions before installation.
  4. Keep extensions updated to their latest versions to avoid security risks.
  5. Remove unused extensions from your browser to minimize exposure.
  6. Install and regularly update antivirus software to defend against malware.
  7. Exercise caution with free extensions, as they may carry hidden risks.
  8. Continuously monitor your system for unusual activity or suspicious behavior.

The advisory urges all users to remain vigilant and take immediate action to safeguard their data. As cyber threats grow more sophisticated, users must stay cautious and proactive in ensuring their online security.
