The federal government has fixed the Diyat (blood money compensation) amount at Rs9.83 million for the financial year 2025-26.
A notification from the Finance Division stated that under Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), the value has been set at Rs9828670, which equals 30,630 grams of silver. According to law, the Diyat is the mandatory financial compensation paid to the heirs of a victim in certain cases of homicide. The PPC requires that this amount be revised every year in line with the prevailing market rate of silver to ensure fairness and consistency.
Compared to last year, the newly fixed value is higher, reflecting a rise in silver prices. This upward adjustment ensures that the compensation maintains its real value and aligns with market trends. Courts and all relevant institutions are bound to follow this updated figure when dealing with Diyat-related cases during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Legal experts note that the annual revision helps standardize compensation across the country, preventing disputes and maintaining transparency.
The Finance Division emphasized that the new rate takes effect immediately and will remain in force until the next revision in the following fiscal year. Families seeking justice through the legal system will now receive compensation based on this updated value. With silver prices influencing the calculation, any future rise or fall in the market will continue to directly impact the Diyat amount, as required by law.
