The city of Gujarat is facing severe urban flooding as continuous heavy rains and poor drainage have caused water to rise up to 4 feet in many areas.
Severe urban flooding has gripped several areas of Gujrat, including Madina Syedan, Kachhari Chowk, Gondal Chowk, Zahoor Elahi Stadium, and Jail Chowk, after record-breaking rainfall. Streets, houses, and public places have been submerged, creating panic among residents as mosque loudspeakers continue to warn citizens of rising water levels. Floodwaters from Nala Bhinder and Nala Bhimba entered residential areas, sweeping away homes and damaging countless shops. Sources said valuable goods have been destroyed, while important government offices, including the Sessions Court premises, remain underwater.
The Meteorological Department confirmed that Gujrat and Gujranwala divisions received an unprecedented 577 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, the highest regional downpour in recent history. Meanwhile, a dangerous flood wave of 319000 cusecs is flowing through the Sutlej River at Head Ganda Singh Wala in Kasur. More than a dozen villages, including Noori Wala, Bhedian, and Usman Wala, have been engulfed. In Laddan, the protective embankment at Mehr Baloch broke, submerging settlements and washing away infrastructure. The wall of the Government Elementary School collapsed, destroying the building and furniture.
Floodwaters from the Ravi River also entered Kund Sargana, Qatalpur, and Barbegi in Kabirwala, where locally built protective dams have broken at several points, worsening the situation. Authorities remain under pressure as residents continue to call for urgent relief and rescue operations. Officials admitted that efforts to divert rainwater have so far failed, leaving citizens to struggle on their own against the devastating impact of the floods.
