Karachi Police detained over 90 individuals for aerial firing during Independence Day celebrations, which turned deadly.
Karachi witnessed a tragic Independence Day as aerial firing claimed three lives, including that of an eight-year-old girl, and left 114 others injured. Police reported recovering 68 illegal weapons and registering 111 cases against suspects, with additional charges of murder and attempted murder lodged against those involved. According to the city’s police surgeon, the victims lost their lives after being struck by stray bullets. The injured included men, women, and children, many of whom were rushed to nearby hospitals. Abbasi Shaheed Hospital received the highest number of patients at 43, followed by Jinnah Hospital with 41, and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Trauma Center with 30 cases.
Authorities noted that this year’s toll is the highest in recent memory for Independence Day celebrations. Last year, two people died and 100 were injured during similar incidents. Police have intensified operations across the city, conducting raids that led to arrests and the seizure of firearms linked to the shootings. Officials warned that strict action will be taken against anyone endangering public safety during festivities.
The city administration and law enforcement agencies have urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and abandon dangerous practices such as aerial firing. They stressed that joy should never come at the cost of lives and called for community cooperation to ensure future celebrations remain safe and peaceful. Independence Day in Karachi, meant to be a day of unity and pride, turned into a grim reminder of the dangers of reckless celebrations. Authorities are now pushing for cultural change, hoping that future festivities will be remembered for their spirit, not their tragedy.
