Karachi to suffer heavy water shortfall over next 48 hours

Water supply in Karachi will be disrupted for 48 hours starting Saturday as authorities shut down key infrastructure to connect a new main line to the existing network, officials said.

Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) starts vital upgrades at Dhabeji Pumping Station this Saturday evening. Workers connect a new transmission line to the old network, causing a 250 million gallons per day (MGD) water shortfall for 48 hours. The shutdown starts at noon on April 25 through to April 27.

It is a component of Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP). This initiative repairs the old pipes in the city and increases supply. Water in the fourth phase, K-II and K-III systems ceases to flow during this period. North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33 and Gulistan-i-Jauhar are fully cut. Low pressure or shortages are experienced in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Saddar and Chanesar Town.

Nine of 21 pumps were closed at Dhabeji. By April 27, seven pumps are turned on. The remaining two remain idle until 5 days later in order to complete tech repairs. Nipa, Safoora, and Sakhi Hasan hydrants shut. Karachi normally receives 650 MGD of water. The supply is also reduced to approximately 400 MGD on the job. KWSC encourages residents to keep water in reserve and put it to good use.

Once this upgrade is completed, better flow and steady pressure is assured throughout the city. It addresses old-time leaks and defective pipes. Promoters emphasize how the little inconvenience will yield long-term benefits. Residents in hit areas prepare now. Local leaders push tanker support for needy spots. KWSC shares updates via helplines. The project steps up Karachi’s fight against water woes.
