KP Employees’ salaries to be cut to support flood victims

The KP government has decided to deduct salaries of its employees and those of semi-government bodies to generate emergency funds for relief and rehabilitation in flood-affected areas.

According to the Finance Department, employees in grades 17 and above will contribute two days’ basic salary, while grades 1 to 16 will give one day’s pay. The deductions will be made in the August 2025 payroll and will cover government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions. Officials said the decision was unanimously approved in a provincial cabinet meeting. The collected funds will be used to provide temporary housing, food supplies, medical care, and other essential relief services. The amount will also support the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and rehabilitation of affected families.

Recent heavy rains and floods in KP have caused significant destruction, leading to the deaths of at least 368 people and injuries to 182. More than 1,300 houses and nearly 100 schools have been damaged, leaving many children displaced and without access to safe water or education. Roads, agricultural land, and other critical facilities have also suffered severe damage, requiring immediate action. Other provinces have also been impacted. Urban flooding in Karachi claimed at least six lives, while Punjab saw widespread flooding along the Indus and Chenab rivers, affecting more than 2,300 families and destroying large areas of farmland.

Authorities stressed that this is a joint effort to provide instant relief to those in need and to accelerate recovery in the worst-hit areas. Experts warn that South Asian countries are facing increasingly severe and unpredictable monsoon seasons, with climate change amplifying the risks to communities and long-term recovery plans.
