In a rather unprecedented move to revitalise healthcare services, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has agreed to transfer Rs5 billion to the State Life Insurance Company.
This decision is a huge step forward in the province’s efforts to reintroduce the Sehat Insaf Card programme, a critical project currently facing financial hardship.
The K-P government is facing an eye-popping debt of Rs17 billion which is owes to the insurance business, a condition that has long jeopardised the continuity of critical healthcare services.
Surprisingly, the administration has opted to face this debt head-on with a phased repayment scheme. The initial Rs5 billion would be given immediately, with monthly installments of Rs3 billion until the total loan is repaid.
A historic reinstatement of healthcare services
The Sehat Insaf Card coverage will be restored on Ramadan 1st in a move that has spurred hope across the province. Initially, 85% of healthcare services will be re-established, with expensive treatments like kidney and liver transplants requiring further clearance from the provincial government.
This cautious but deliberate approach represents a significant shift in the government’s commitment to delivering sustainable healthcare to its inhabitants.
The decision reverses the caretaker government’s prior cutbacks, which restricted cancer and renal dialysis treatment coverage. The present administration’s brave step demonstrates its commitment to reestablish comprehensive healthcare services despite budgetary problems.
