Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported another case of polio raising the total number of cases across Pakistan this year to 50 according to the provincial health department.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad has confirmed the first polio case of 2025 involving a 20 month-old girl from Union Council Malazai in Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). This raises KP’s total polio cases to 21, while Sindh has reported 19 cases and Balochistan the highest at 27. Punjab and Islamabad have each recorded one case.
To curb the spread of polio, the KP government has introduced strict measures by linking essential government certificates such as birth, marriage, and death certificates with proof of polio vaccination. Residents in at least seven tehsils of Peshawar District are now required to provide a verification certificate from the district health office confirming vaccination status to obtain these documents.
These initiatives aim to bolster efforts to eradicate polio, particularly in high-risk areas. Authorities continue to stress the importance of vaccination campaigns to safeguard children from this preventable disease. Nationwide efforts are expected to intensify to address the growing number of cases, especially in provinces with higher infection rates.
