Lahore on high alert as rivers swell, flood threat looms

Lahore, the capital of Punjab, and nearby areas are on high alert as rising waters from the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers pose a threat of flooding in parts of the city.

Punjab is facing a dangerous flood situation as heavy monsoon rains and water released from India’s Thane and Madhopur dams have pushed river levels to alarming heights. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have issued strong warnings, urging people to stay alert and move to safe areas.

The Ravi River is carrying nearly 2.5 lakh cusecs near Kot Naina and Jasr, while the Chenab has surged to 7.79 lakh cusecs at Marala. In Shakargarh, the Nila Bensi and Nila Harn rivers have overflowed, sweeping through villages. Cracks in protective embankments near Okara and Burewala have flooded fields and damaged settlements. Sialkot and nearby districts have recorded record rainfall, triggering roof collapses, road blockages, and widespread destruction. In Lahore, heavy downpours have damaged buildings and disrupted normal life, with authorities advising citizens to limit travel and prepare for emergency evacuation.

Rescue operations are in full swing, with the army, Rangers, police, and emergency teams mobilized across Punjab. Nearly 150000 people have already been evacuated and shifted to relief camps, where food, medicine, and shelter are being provided. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has instructed federal ministers and disaster agencies to remain on high alert and ensure swift rescue and relief work. District administrations have also asked residents of low-lying areas in Lahore and surrounding districts to move to safer places immediately.

Authorities have cautioned that the next 48 hours are crucial, with forecasts of more heavy rainfall in Lahore and adjoining areas. Officials fear the situation could worsen further, making strict precautionary measures essential for public safety.
