Police have arrested the gunman of Liaquat Mehsood, President of the All Dumper Truck Owners Association, for allegedly opening fire on protesters in Karachi.
Officers said they also recovered a weapon from his possession. The violence began when locals staged a protest after a garbage dumper ran over a motorcyclist, killing him and injuring his wife. Angry residents damaged the dumper and later set it on fire in response to the accident.
During the protest, Liaquat Mehsood reportedly arrived with around 20 to 25 armed men and opened fire on the crowd. The group then fled towards the Garden area while continuing to shoot, creating panic in the neighborhood. Thankfully, police reached the scene and began efforts to restore order.
Authorities have registered two separate cases at the Garden Police Station. One case has been filed against the dumper driver, Niaz, for causing the accident. The second case is against Liaquat Mehsood and his armed accomplices on charges of attempted murder, culpable homicide, and negligence. Police have confirmed that raids are underway to arrest Liaquat and others involved in the violence.
Meanwhile, the incident has intensified public anger over frequent road accidents caused by heavy vehicles in the city. A day earlier, another serious accident took place near Hospital Chowrangi in Landhi. A speeding dumper ran over two motorcyclists, killing 20-year-old Kashan and seriously injuring 19-year-old Javed. As a result, citizens are demanding strict action against reckless dumper drivers and stronger enforcement of traffic rules. Authorities have assured that action will be taken to prevent such incidents and ensure public safety on the roads.
