Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a major relief package for families affected by the devastating floods in the province.
She said that families whose homes were completely destroyed will receive Rs1 million each, while those with partially damaged houses will be provided Rs500000 for repairs. The chief minister also announced compensation for livestock owners, stating that they will receive between Rs200000 and Rs500000, depending on their losses. She assured that the distribution of cheques will begin within five days.
Highlighting the devastation, Maryam Nawaz said the floods have affected 27 cities and over 5000 villages. She added that timely action by the Punjab government saved countless lives, as relief efforts ensured the safe evacuation of 2.5 million people along with their livestock. Food and other essentials were also provided to those displaced.
Pakistan is currently facing one of the worst flood crises in its history. Relentless monsoon rains, flash floods, and glacial lake outbursts have so far claimed over 800 lives and affected more than 1.2 million people nationwide. The destruction of infrastructure, homes, and farmland has added to the country’s already difficult economic challenges, with estimated losses reaching $50 billion.
