MDCAT registration now mandatory for studying medicine abroad

The federal government has made it compulsory for medical students intending to study abroad to register for MDCAT.

The registration process will be facilitated through the PMDC website. Sources report that no medical student will be allowed to study abroad without completing the registration.

This new policy is designed to offer better protection and supervision for Pakistani students while ensuring they gain admission to accredited foreign medical institutions. The decision comes in response to a series of violent incidents involving Pakistani students in Kyrgyzstan in 2024, raising significant concerns over their safety.

It is expected that this registration requirement will help safeguard students and guarantee they receive quality education abroad. At present, thousands of Pakistani students are enrolled in medical colleges across countries such as China, Cuba, and various Central Asian nations.

In related news, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on National Health Services recently highlighted the need for transparency and fairness in the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT). Chaired by Dr. Mahesh Kumar Malani, the committee also proposed a unified national curriculum to address regional disparities in education and provide equal opportunities for all students.

The committee also raised concerns over out-of-syllabus questions in MDCAT exams calling for more accuracy in question papers to prevent post-exam corrections. A revised answer key has already addressed students’ complaints regarding deleted questions. Further legal reviews and consultations will inform the final decisions on these reforms.
