Millions lose health services as US freezes aid

The suspension of all US foreign aid programs is impacting Pakistan, forcing over 60 health facilities to shut down, leaving 1.7 million people, including 1.2 million Afghan refugees, without essential reproductive health services.

This will leave 1.7 million people, including 1.2 million Afghan refugees, without essential reproductive health services. UNFPA’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Pio Smith, voiced deep concern, warning that millions of women and girls in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan now face life-threatening risks. He emphasized that these services are a lifeline for vulnerable people in crisis situations.

Following the US decision to halt nearly all foreign aid programs for a 90-day review, UNFPA has suspended projects funded by US grants. The organization estimates it will need over $308 million in 2025 to sustain critical health services in these three countries.

In Washington, it was announced that from February 7, most USAID staff worldwide will be placed on administrative leave, except those managing mission-critical tasks and essential programs. The agency’s leadership will notify key personnel by February 6.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that funding for international aid projects would continue but only after a detailed review. He stressed that the Trump administration reluctantly issued the suspension and would now determine which programs should be exempted.

During his visit to Guatemala, Rubio reiterated that USAID had not responded to requests for a funding review. The situation has raised concerns about the future of humanitarian aid in South Asia, where millions depend on these services.

The aid suspension is expected to deepen the health crisis in Pakistan and neighboring countries, leaving many without vital medical support.
