Mobile internet shut down, heavy traffic restricted in Islamabad

Amid possible law and order concerns at Faizabad, the Islamabad Traffic Police has released a detailed traffic diversion plan.

The Interior Ministry has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on the orders of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. According to the official letter, the suspension began on Friday night and will remain in effect until further notice. Reports confirm that internet services have already been shut down in several areas of Rawalpindi to help maintain law and order amid security concerns.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province for 10 days, banning the gathering of four or more people in public places, streets, and open areas. The Punjab Home Department stated that the decision aims to prevent unrest and ensure public safety. However, the order will not apply to prayers, weddings, funerals, offices, or courts. The government has also imposed a complete ban on the display of weapons, loudspeaker use, and all public rallies during this period.

In addition, the Rawalpindi District Administration has issued a separate notification extending Section 144 until October 17. The order prohibits gatherings of five or more people, pillion riding on motorcycles, and attempts to remove police barriers. Carrying weapons, sticks, shotguns, or explosives has also been banned, and authorities have warned of strict legal action against anyone violating these rules or making provocative speeches.

In Islamabad, multiple routes leading to the Red Zone have been sealed off due to protests by a religious group. Containers have been placed at Serena Chowk, Express Chowk, Nadra Chowk, and Marriott Chowk, blocking entry. Faizabad and Zero Point have also been closed, causing major traffic disruptions and inconvenience for commuters amid restricted movement and mobile service suspension.
