KARACHI – Pakistanis are excited about the launch of new currency notes which are set to be launched by year’s end, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmed told Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue.
The central bank plans to replace all current notes, ranging from Rs. 10 – Rs. 5,000, and relevant authorities are working on design and other details, especially about the plastic option.
The new currency notes will be made from polymer, pending approval from federal cabinet. Initially, a test note will be produced to assess durability and security of the polymer material. If successful, these new notes will be issued across the country.
Despite concerns from the committee about the potential misuse of the Rs. 5,000 note, the governor confirmed that it will not be demonetised. He stated that law enforcement agencies are tasked with addressing misuse, and the Rs. 5,000 note will be part of the updated currency series.
