The Directorate of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P) has clarified media reports suggesting a substantial increase in passport fee, noting that there’s been no change in passport fee structure since March 7.
Recent reports suggested that the federal government had revised the fee structure for e-passports, machine-readable passports (MRPs), and passport replacements to streamline the passport issuance system.
The report noted that the new charges were added to support more efficient services, and updated rates depend on the type of passport and processing speed selected by applicants.
“In addition to the updated fees for passport applications, the government has introduced new charges for replacing lost passports. The fee for replacing a lost passport for the first time is set at Rs54,000. However, the cost increases significantly for repeat losses, with the fee for a third-time loss now standing at Rs356,000,” read one report.
However, the Passport Directorate has dismissed these reports, reassuring citizens about the cost to obtain a new passport or renew existing ones.
