The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) will offer free Wi-Fi at public locations in Islamabad, but users will be required to verify their identity before accessing the service.
This step aims to ensure that a record of each connection is maintained so authorities can identify who used the Wi-Fi at a particular location. The move is designed to strengthen security and reduce potential cyber threats across public networks. Under the project, free Wi-Fi hotspots will be set up in busy locations, including metro bus stations, commercial zones and other public areas where footfall is high. With these installations, authorities intend to expand digital access while keeping proper checks on online activity to prevent misuse.
In addition, the NTC has partnered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and other departments to speed up implementation. Officials involved in the project noted that verifying user identity is an essential responsibility for both the system operators and the public, as it ensures safe and secure use of shared networks.
Moreover, the initiative aligns with the government’s broader digital connectivity goals. By improving public access to the internet and maintaining strict cyber security protocols, the authorities want to encourage safe online participation for residents and commuters. The NTC emphasized that the new verification requirement will help protect users and reduce the risk of illegal or harmful activities conducted through free public Wi-Fi. It added that the system will benefit people who depend on internet access in public spaces by offering connectivity without compromising safety.
