Pakistan cuts test squad for South Africa series

Pakistan’s Test squad for the series against South Africa has been reduced after two players were released from the team.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has finalized the national squad for the upcoming two-Test home series against South Africa under the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27. According to sources, fast bowler Amir Jamal and spinner Faisal Akram have been released from the squad, reducing the team strength from 18 to 16 players.

The first Test between Pakistan and South Africa will be played at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium from October 12 to 16, while the second Test will be held at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from October 20 to 24. South Africa enters the series as the reigning champion of the ICC World Test Championship 2023–25.

Shan Masood has been retained as Pakistan’s Test captain, while opener Imam-ul-Haq has made his return to the squad. However, young batter Saim Ayub has been dropped after a string of low scores. The PCB has placed strong emphasis on spin options for the series, expecting turning pitches to play a major role. The spin department now includes Sajid Khan, Noman Ali, Abrar Ahmed, and mystery spinner Asif Afridi, providing the team with depth and variety. Meanwhile, significant changes have been made to the fast bowling lineup, as Naseem Shah and Mir Hamza have both been left out of the squad.

Officials believe the revamped combination will give Pakistan a better balance between experience and skill, especially in home conditions. Team management is confident that the squad can perform strongly against the powerful South African lineup, which features several world-class players. Preparations are already underway in Lahore, with players focusing on adapting to pitch conditions ahead of the high-stakes Test series.
